Dreaming in the bath tub

My lovely followers,

It’s December and Christmas is coming soon. The perfect time to have a relaxing bath in the evenings. I thought it’s time for the next before/after reveal from my latest project. I will show you the transformation of the parent’s bath/bedroom you can see in the image below.

I’ve already written about the living room, staircase and teenage bathroom transformation and this parent’s bedroom had actually the same vibe like the other rooms before: tired, old fashioned, weird colour combinations, heavy… What you can see in the image below is a tiny attached en-suite shower room with a damp and mouldy shower tray. What you actually can’t see is a small built in wardrobe next to it.

I definitely wanted to keep an en-suite bathroom, but I needed to design a different room layout to brighten up the space and to integrate a bath tub, a big shower, two vanities and a separate loo.

Something that was definitely worth working with was the lovely view to the outside, because directly in front of the big window is a very old copper beech. In summer it will provide great shade and in the winter time you still have the massive nature sculpture to look at. The size of the window was an additional advantage together with the good state of the pine flooring.

Right from the beginning I had the vision of a lovely bath tub placed in front of the window, but the waste pipes were on the other side and I definitely didn’t want to build a step within the room, because in this small space the flow would have been disturbed.

I played around with different solutions and in the end I ended up extending the window sill to the front to gain space behind for the waste pipes. Therefore we need to carefully remove the old panelling to use it again later on. I opened up the bathroom to the bedroom to give the whole space more room to breathe.

The builders stripped all walls down and the opening allowed additional light coming through the single window of the former shower area into the space. I designed two vanity units facing each other in this corner, framed by two large and illuminated mirrors. Behind the one sink I created a spacious shower niche cladded again with Silestone ( have a look at my blog post “ The Silestone Bathroom” to get more information about working with this material). This time I chose the colour “ Eternal Statuario” in a “ Suede” finish. This is a slightly marbled white tone which gives the space a bit more depth. An additional lighting design scheme including a feature lighting above the bath tub, hidden LED stripes in the shower plus downlights above the vanities is making the ambience in this parent’s retreat perfect. Have a look yourself.

The highlight and focal point is for sure the very sophisticated and luxurious Italian bath tub. I had to go to London to really try it in the show room. Never buy an expensive bath tub without trying it before! It is so important to figure out if the length and the shape fit your personal preferences.

Next to the bath tub I absolutely fell in love with the VOLA taps and towel radiator made in Denmark. I purchased them in a Matt White and they are just so beautiful and the epitome of simplicity for me.

Because I opened up the bathroom towards the bedroom I designed white linen curtains to function as a room divider. They are softening the complete feel of this room and add so much elegance and natural purity.

The actual bedroom space I kept pretty simple with a kingsize bed upholstered in white linen and paired back bedside tables in white with a natural rattan mesh inlay. A small niche in the wall got some waney edge ash boards to follow the scheme of the whole house.

The separate loo got a special wallpaper showing trees in a misty wood. I ordered it in a bespoke size and it gives this place calmness and tranquility and just this little extra bit. The pine floors were sanded back and they got a white wash wax varnish finish to match the Scandinavian feel of the entire house.

This transformation was massive and the result is a luxurious home spa retreat for adults only with a calm feel of simplicity and room to breathe and sleep well.
