People often ask me, what I like about White. So I try to explain it in this post. Hope you are all well in this early February and , actually, maybe it could be quite nice to talk about White in February- the time , when it is still dark outside, when you stand up and dark again, when you go to bed.
Where can we find pure White? In nature, water with its different conditions is the element which can often be perceived as a beautiful White- for example while freezing. I don’t know how you feel, when you are exposed to snow, I mean, really a lot of snow? For me the first intuitive feeling is- S I L E N C E.
It’s a kind of a feeling like plugging your earphones in - everything turns from being loud, noisy and vibrant to absolutely peaceful, calm and relaxing. I just read the book from Erling Kagge, a Norwegian explorer, who once spent fifty days walking solo across Antarctica, his radio broken. He describes the power and the silence he felt during this experience in the White snow. I mean, I personally have never been to Antarctica, but on my evening walks in Austria after being on the slopes the whole day, I could feel that silence, this pure and true cold- this frozen power of nature.
Maybe I like the snow, because I love the water. Don’t know. In my whole life I am drawn to the sea, to wide water and the openness- the flow. Maybe White just brings this elemental side of nature in. White is both, powerful and calm.
Where else can we see White in nature? Clouds often appear White, but they can change form and shape. For me clouds are accociated with change, in a good and sometimes bad sense. Dark clouds bring storm and rain, but white clouds are variable. They either can turn into trouble, or they suddenly disappear. Sometimes they come in form of fog and we can’t barely see the direction. Clouds are adding a bit of soul, a bit of texture to blue skies and our lives. Often sunsets in between clouds are the most beautiful ones. The White of clouds definitely functions as an off-beat factor. And as you know, I like change and I am fascinated by slightly off-beat angles.
And I think another reason, why I love White, is, that it reminds me of a sheer and blank piece of paper. A paper which can be filled with your ideas, your visions and your experiences. Only you can create something special with it. It gives you the perfect base to reflect and to develop. White just is an invitation to let it flow, to make it happen and not to be distracted .
White in interiors does exactly a mix of all this. It functions as a blank canvas for life and your experiences within, it opens the room for furniture and it is a beautiful background for art ( there is a reason, why most galleries are designed very simple and often white). White reflect natural light the best and all the nordic countries react to this by having no curtains, painting their floors white and having white sofa covers. Even children react to White in an absolutely fascinating way. They feel comfortable and relax. I often hear from friends of our kids, that they really love the white scheme at our home. And they try to convince their parents to paint their homes, too.
White gives you power and soul and the feeling of home.
White is the epitome for peace, silence, flow, change and vision. It connects you with yourself and with the others- it actually connects you with your unique life.
Thank you so much for reading my love letter for White:-)
